Todd Dunn – Republican Candidate for Sheriff, Person County

Each year brings many changes, and I welcome 2026 and the changes it may bring for our county.  However, what hasn't changed for me is the love I have for this county.  My family is from Person County, I grew up here, graduated from Person High School, joined the Marines, then Army, served in Operation Desert Storm, and was awarded 2 Bronze Campaign Stars.  After serving I came back to this county to make it our home and to raise our 3 children.  I worked in the Sheriff's department for close to 20 years.  Spent time working on criminal and narcotics investigations, and became one of the lead crime scene processors in the county.

I have several reasons as to why I am running for Sheriff; the main reason is to restore accountability within the department.  The public deserves to know where the funding goes within the Sheriff's budget; a specific line-item budget should be made available to the public that provides an understandable description of the funds used.  Over 24% of our county's budget goes into Public Safety, and a great deal of that money goes to the Sheriff's department.  It should be used wisely.

Our jail has become a major issue.  Drugs are rampant within the jail, and the past issues of the last 4 years are concerning.  There was a recent civil jail case that may have federal impacts.  From available court documents, the case was recently settled with the amount owed to the plaintiff from the county pending public disclosure.  The jail itself needs to be in line with state mandates.  Credibility must be restored back into the department.

I want to tackle quite a bit in the next 4 years.  My main issues are:

  • The jail, review all protocols, training of detention officers, intake, etc.
  • Work with other stakeholders to reduce our county's drug problem.
  • Create and maintain safe learning environments in our schools for our teachers and students.
  • Establish a program that will provide wellness checks for our older seniors.
  • Develop, define and implement improved training and policy standards and for all staff and deputies.
  • Improve department morale.
  • A thorough audit of the Sheriff's Department's budget to review all expenses and to locate savings.

I will be a constitutional Sheriff; one who will provide civil and criminal justice, and protect our citizens and ensure public safety.

Please feel free to email me with your questions.  I take this campaign and position very seriously, and hope I can gain your vote.  I will get the job DUNN.
