Due to mounting evidence accumulated in recent months regarding behavior detrimental to the Party, the 14-member Person County Republican Party Executive Committee has moved to censure two prominent individuals, both who serve in Person County government. Those being censured include elected Commissioner, Sherry Wilborn, and appointed Planning Board member, Steven McFarland.
It is a serious matter to censure any one individual, let alone two. After careful review of facts collected, the decision to censure was determined by a unanimous Executive Committee vote for each. The decision the committee takes to censure is directly related to the two individual’s actions against the interests of the local Republican party. Such an action is warranted during times when egregious behavior against the party or its platform is clear and evident.
The censure of an individual will include disciplinary action by the party as is customary. Thus, and because of their deliberate and collusive actions, Wilborn and McFarland are both barred from attending any GOP meeting, activity, or party-sponsored event for a period of two (2) years.
As Chair of the Person County GOP, I am saddened that the executive committee even had to consider such action in the first place to hold these individuals to account. But, someone must stand up against such. If not, the party just endlessly wears the shame of such divisive actions which clearly deviate from the party platform and casts doubt on affiliation.
